... a website about me and the things I do

work...

I design and build websites and internet services with the accent on those that involve mobile phones. Here are some examples...

skills...

Interaction design and development can sound like it is trying to be incomprehensible. The design side of things can involve jargon terms such as wire-framing, paper prototyping, user journeys and personas, process flows and storyboards while the development side uses lots of abbreviations. My work involves plenty of PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript (including libraries such as MooTools and jQuery). I've used Code Igniter and WordPress to help me build sites and have used the APIs from Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Google Maps and OpenLayers (mapping).

I also have a good understanding of such nebulous disciplines as information architecture, usability, service design and user experience design. But what does it all mean?

It means that I can design and build websites from scratch, starting out with a blank sheet of paper and a meeting with the client. It means that I can see the project through and deliver a finished website that meets all the client's needs - including many that they didn't know they had.

I always aim to create sites that are easy to use and a pleasure to visit. I don't do much visual design (you guessed?) but I can create highly effective websites that users can understand and engage with.

the website...

I built this website to give you some idea of what I get up to both when I'm at my desk and when I'm away from it. I've also included a couple of curios to provoke some thinking.

The website doesn't boast any great technological marvels as I have aimed instead for simplicity in both looks and user experience. So the website you see gets resized to fit the size of your browser window. The experience also changes - as the browser window gets smaller so the complexity of the experience is reduced to match.

Have a look at this website on your smartphone or play around with the size of this browser window to see what I mean...
